“I Lost Something I’d Never Had Before” — Alan Jackson Breaks Down Over Son-in-Law’s Tragic Death in Emotional Revelation

Country music legend Alan Jackson has long been known for his timeless songs and strong family values—but behind the scenes, he’s been carrying a pain that few ever knew. Now, for the first time in a deeply emotional and heart-shattering revelation, the country icon is speaking out about the tragic death of his beloved son-in-law, Ben Selecman—and how it nearly broke him.

Alan Jackson's Son-In-Law Ben Selecman Passes Away

In 2018, Jackson’s world was rocked when Ben Selecman, the husband of his eldest daughter Mattie, died at just 28 years old after a freak accident. While helping a woman onto a boat in West Palm Beach, Florida, Ben fell and suffered a traumatic head injury—an accident that would tragically take his life and leave the Jackson family reeling.

“When he died, I was kind of pissed off at the world,” Jackson revealed in a candid interview with HITS Daily Double. “I just wasn’t feeling right about anything.”

That raw, unfiltered grief took a deep toll on Jackson—not just personally, but creatively. At the time, he had been working on an album… but the pain was too much. The project was shelved indefinitely as he struggled through the darkness of loss and the anger of unanswered questions.

Eventually, that same pain became the foundation of his most personal record to date, Where Have You Gone. Released in May 2021, the album includes several soul-stirring tracks inspired by his family and the love he’s lost—songs like “You’ll Always Be My Baby,” written for his daughters’ weddings, and “Where Her Heart’s Always Been,” a tribute to his late mother.

But the ache of losing Ben—the only other man in a house full of women—still lingers deeply.

“It’s all I was ever around: girls and women,” Jackson said, reflecting on life with his wife Denise and their three daughters: Mattie (30), Ali (27), and Dani (23). “So having a son-in-law was having a boy I could fish with, work on cars and stuff with. It was tough losing him so suddenly — so jarring to all of us. I lost something I’d never had before.

The words sting, even now—years later. For Jackson, Ben wasn’t just family. He was a connection to a kind of brotherhood the singer had never known. And losing that bond shattered something irreplaceable.

Though Where Have You Gone marked his first album in six years, it’s more than just music. It’s a memorial, a confession, and a healing journey woven into song. Jackson didn’t just put his grief into words—he gave it a melody.

Fans and fellow artists alike have praised the album’s emotional depth, but few knew just how real the pain behind it truly was… until now.

In a world that often celebrates the highs of fame, Alan Jackson is showing the world the other side—the quiet heartbreak, the family bond, and the irreplaceable loss that changed him forever. 💔
